A magnitude 8.1 earthquake has been recorded in the waters north of Hokkaido, Japan near the Kuril Islands, Russia. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii has issued a warning for northern Japan and other parts of the Pacific Basin. However, officials say a damaging tsunami is not expected to hit the western coast of the United States or Canada. 海嘯波是重力長波，波長可達100公里以上；它的傳播速度等於重力加速度（9．8米／秒）與海水深度乘積的平方根，所以，海水越深，海嘯波速度越快，海水越淺，海嘯波速度越慢。當海嘯波由遠離海岸的深海區，進入海岸附近的淺海區後，波速便急劇降下來，後面的波速依然很快，後波就追上了前波，前後波相疊加，便使波浪的高度倍增，形成幾米、甚至幾十米高的巨浪。因此，在離海岸不遠的淺海區深藍色海面就會突然變成白色，並在其前方出現一道長長的明亮的水牆；位於淺海區的船隻就會突然劇烈地上下顛簸起來；海面上也會響起巨大的、驚人的、可怕的咆哮聲。四種前兆現象，是海嘯臨近的標志，是災難預警信號，它警示人們：海嘯即將登陸，要生存，趕快向高處逃跑，否則，長則十幾分鍾，短則幾分鍾，甚至只有幾十秒，就會被巨浪吞沒。

其實，英語中的這個詞「Tsunami」是從日語中來的。主要原因：
1946年に起きたアリューシャン地專震の際、日系屬移民が用いたことからハワイで「Tsunami」の語が使われるようになり、アメリカでも広く用いられるようになったため、「Tsunami（津波）」は國際語となった。
英語にも「津波」を表す「tidal
wave」という語があるにもかかわらず「Tsunami」が用いられるのは、上記経緯のほかに、「tidal」は「潮」を意味する言葉であり、津波が満干によって起こる現象ではないためと考えられる。
